The Casino Has A
Fine History

|
Most people view the modern casino as one of the busiest and most
exciting places you can be but they are not the first generation to
think this. In fact, they are far from being the first people to enjoy
spending their time in a casino because there is a very long history of
people gathering in venues or places similar to what is recognized
today as the
modern casino. The names have changed, the games will be slightly
different and of course, there will be none of the glitz and glamour
that is synonymous with the modern casino but people have been playing
games for money for a very long time.
Even though the exact origin of gambling is unknown there is a record
of it from the Chinese which dates back to 2300 BC. This is not to say
that that the Chinese were the first to gamble for money and they were
certainly not the last because there is plenty to suggest that the
Ancient Greeks and the Romans had a love for gambling. As history
progressed, the Napoleonic era France and the Elizabethan era in
England were brightened up by the chance to play games of chance where
money was placed on the outcome of the game.
The first recorded gambling house in Europe, coming close to what is
expected of a modern casino, was the Ridotto, which could be found in
Venice, Italy. The Ridotto opened in 1638 and gambling was permitted
during the carnival season but in 1770, the government decided to close
down the Ridotto as they believed it was ruining the lives and finances
of many of the gentry.
With respect to American history, casinos were referred to as saloons
and the four cities of New Orleans, Chicago, San Francisco and St Louis
which became synonymous with gambling. However, in the early years of
the 20th Century, gambling was outlawed but a big change was to come in
1931. This was when the state of Nevada, in addition to Reno and Las
Vegas, legalized gambling, become the home of the modern day casino as
we know and love it. New Jersey decided to allow gambling in Atlantic
City in 1978 and quickly developed itself as the second biggest
gambling city in the United States.
Nowadays with the ability to log on to a casino site and play, people
all around the world, where local legislation allows, have the chance
to play casino games and gamble for money. Even through all the changes
and development, there has been a desire to gamble for money and today
is considered to be the golden era of gambling by so many people.
